The General Motors Firebird I is part of a series of three concept cars designed by pioneer Harley Earl, and built by General Motors for the 1953, 1956 and 1959 Motorama auto shows. The Firebird I boasted the first gas turbine powered car tested in the United States and its entire fiberglass body was inspired by innovations in fighter aircraft designs of the time. The purpose of the program was to showcase the extremes in technology and design that General Motors was able to achieve.
