Microfiber Towels & Sponges
KC Auto has the highest quality microfiber towels at the best prices on the market for all your cleaning needs. Quality microfiber towels are an important key to a successful automotive detail. Why not use cotton or a chamois? A cotton fiber strand is a solid fiber that is only capable of pushing around dirt on the surface increasing the opportunity for scratching and causing swirls. Chamois create a suction between the chamois and the paint therefore also creating scratches and swirls. So what is a microfiber and which microfiber towel should you use?
Microfiber is a synthetic textile fiber thinner than silk and is a combination of two fibers: polyester and polyamide (a nylon by-product). The polyester provides structure to the towel and the polyamide increases density and absorption. When pressure is applied the two fibers separate creating grooves (picture the spaces between the points of a star) that collect and retain dirt particles. A static charge pulls the dirt to the fiber and encapsulates it preventing scratching or causing swirls as you continue over the surface.
A quality microfiber is graded by its fiber composition percentage, the number of splits and its weight. A 70/30 towel is comprised of 70% polyester and 30% polyamide. 70% structure, 30% density and absorption. This towel will be long-lasting (up to 600 washes) and very absorbent.
Split microfiber can absorb up to 6 times its own weight in liquid and is better at retaining polishes and waxes. Even though manufacturers don't measure the number of splits in their towels, knowing your towel is made of split microfiber will assure you of a quality towel.
The weight of microfiber is measured in gsm (grams per square meter). The higher the weight, the more fibers there are per square inch, therefore, increasing the life of the towel and its softness. As a general rule, lower gsm towels are used for glass and general cleaning. As the number increases so do the softness and safety of using it on sensitive paint and surfaces.
